RIDING STYLE

“Becoming One”:

If I ride balanced and synchronized with my horse I will allow maxim performance and enhanced freedom of movement.  This concept has been described simply as “becoming one” with your horse.  No matter the discipline, it will make the experience much better for both horse and rider.  As riding with balance is a learned skill it can only be accomplished by teaching our mind to use our body correctly.

Ok, so as the concept of “becoming one” with a horse is easy to say, fortunately it is possible, but NOT without a little hard work.  With consistent, structured and detailed lessons, it can be accomplished.  This is where I come in… as a bull rider for over 25 years; I have learned to become one with those bulls and it is this knowledge that I am trying to convey to all my students.  Am I trying to teach you to ride bulls?? NO!  But I am trying to teach you to ride your horse with as little restriction possible.  I want you to stay centered front to back, stay square with your shoulders/hips and keep your hands low.

First of all if you were to ask other trainers/riders about becoming one with your horse you may hear many different versions but they are essentially geared towards achieving the same result.  But the trick is how do we achieve this?  How do we describe this to the student?  What experiences do the other trainers/riders have that proves how to really become one with your horse?

Here are some basic ideas that are critical to this way of riding:

SQUARE SHOULDERS and SQUARE HIPS

Concept:  It is my belief that you should ride with your legs and hips.  If you do, it will provide you the best opportunity to maintain your seat and "stay in it"!  Yet the question is how.  How do we learn to do this?  Trust me, it is possible.  First of all we need to square our shoulders with our horse’s shoulders.  If we are square with our horse then our hips will stay square and essentially our body will be placed in the optimal position for great balance.  Again, trust me, because I didn't learn to ride bulls successfully by using my hands it was all in my legs/hips.  Staying square with our horse will allow us to achieve balanced riding from our hips which will allow us to use our hands less for balance.  Besides, our hands are only used to provide direction.

This style of riding may not be new, but coming from a bull rider’s perspective may open up much more details and intricacies that many have never tapped into.  Well, this is just a sample of the detail that I will discuss and teach… more to follow.
